What is
Cryptainer?
Cryptainer is a simple,
easy to use encryption
software that creates an
encrypted virtual drive. It
provides password
protection and hides any
file or folder ensuring
file encryption,
automatically.
Cryptainer creates a volume
(vault) that can only be
accessed with a password.
This vault stores files in
an encrypted form. Once
mounted/loaded, the
Cryptainer drive is like
any other drive you
normally work with.
It functions like any other
drive (C: or D:) on your
computer. Just drag and
drop any file into the
Cryptainer Vault. It is
automatically encrypted.
When you unload/unmount
this Cryptainer drive, it
disappears!
The Cryptainer Drive is
actually a file. All data
is stored encrypted within
this volume file. You can
move/modify/copy/delete
this file.
More information on
Cryptainer can be found
here
What is a
volume/virtual
drive?
A "volume" is an encrypted
container that Cryptainer
creates. When
loaded/mounted, it shows up
under Windows as a new
drive (E: or F: etc.). When
unloaded, it
disappears!
Does
Cryptainer work on 64 bit
version of Windows?
Yes, Cryptainer works on 64
bit versions of
Windows.
Is
Cryptainer compatible with
Linux/MAC?
No, Cryptainer does not
work on Linux or Mac PC's.
They work on all 32 bit
versions of Windows.
(Windows 95, 98, 2000, 2000
sever, XP, XP Home, XP
Professional, 2003
server)
I have
forgotten my password. What
can I do?
We apologize, but for your
total security, there are
no 'back doors' in the
software. If you lose your
password, there is no way
to recover the contents of
the encrypted file. Not
even Cypherix® will be able
to help. To help in
remembering multiple
passwords, it is advisable
to use a single encrypted
text file to keep all the
passwords.
Should this be a
constraint, our Enterprise
Solution software,
Cryptainer SE, has a built
in feature which allows
password recovery
More information on
Cryptainer SE can be found
here.
Can I
increase or change the size
of the Cryptainer Volume,
after creation?
The Cryptainer volume/drive
cannot be resized. It is
only a matter of creating a
new volume of the desired
size and copying the files
from the previous volume
into the new one.
You can have up to four
Cryptainer drives
working/loaded at the same
time.
I have lost
my cryptainer volume and
cannot find it. Please
advise.
The Cryptainer Drive
(vault) is actually a file.
All data is stored in an
encrypted form within this
drive.
The file behaves like a
regular windows drive only
after mounting it through
the program interface. Once
you exit Cryptainer, the
volume is like any other
file or folder on the
windows system.
You need to remember the
location you installed the
cryptainer drive in.
(The default location is
...\WINNT\system32\cxl1706
under Win2k and
...\Windows\system32\cxl1706
under WinXP and Win 98)
Is it
possible to access
cryptainer volumes on the
network?
Yes, it is possible to
access encrypted volumes
across a network. All you
need to do is create a
Cryptainer volume on your
network drive and then
mount it. Please note,
however, that you will need
to map the remote
drive/folder in which the
Cryptainer volume is
created on to the local
machine as a mapped drive.
Thereafter, you can mount
the volume, from this
mapped drive, on the local
machine.
In the interest of
security, Cryptainer volume
may not be directly loaded
on more than one computer
at a time.
What happens
to my data if I uninstall
Cryptainer?
Even if Cryptainer is
uninstalled, the encrypted
volume containing your data
will stay intact. The
security of your data is
not jeopardised in any way.
However, you will not be
able to access the volume
unless you have Cryptainer
installed on the
machine.
I cannot
seem to find the feature
'Install-Cryptainer Mobile'
in the toolbar. Please
Help!
Perhaps you are using
Windows ME/98? We are
unfortunately restrained to
not being able to offer the
mobile option in Windows 98
because the windows 98/ME
environment does not allow
for the automatic loading
of drivers.
A work around to this would
be to install the full
version of Cryptainer on
your desktop. You can use
the 'Tools -- Additional
Cryptainer Volumes -- Load
a volume' feature, in order
to manually load any volume
files stored in your
USB/Removable device.
I deleted
some files from the
cryptainer drive. Is there
a way to retrieve
them?
There is no way to retrieve
the files deleted from the
Cryptainer drive. In the
interest of the security of
your data, these files are
not stored in the Recycle
bin. If you confirmed the
deletion when prompted, the
files are deleted
permanently.
However, please note that
if you were to use data
recovery softwares, it may
be possible to retrieve the
files.
FYI - Files deleted from
the Cryptainer volume, are
deleted like any other file
you delete from your
computer. In order to
delete your files securely
(with no way of recovery)
you must 'shred' your
files. More information on
how to shred your files can
be found here
I got a Win
32 Error. What do I
do?
A "Win32" or an I/O error
shows up incase there is an
older installed version of
Cryptainer or from the
Cryptainer service not
being completely removed or
partially removed. Please
ignore the error message
and re-install the
software. This ought to
resolve the problem.
Can
Cryptainer encrypt an
entire hard drive without
creating a virtual drive
within it?
For the security of your
data Cryptainer does not
allow you to encrypt an
entire hard drive. You
could create as many large
volume files as you like
and store your data in it.
It is not recommended to
create a volume file as
large as your hard
disk.
Can
Cryptainer Mobile be
installed without
administrator
privileges?
Unfortunately this is not
possible. Cryptainer runs
as a process within the
Windows framework. It needs
be enabled as well be
started up and shut down on
request. It is necessarily
constrained, by the overall
Windows configuration, of
the client machine.
This in turn is derived
from the security,
permissions, to illustrate
just one instance of the
client machine.
Please note that while
Cryptainer Mobile cannot be
used without Administrative
Privileges, The full
version (Cryptainer) can be
installed on any machine,
with or without Admin
privileges.
Can I
install and run programs
from a Cryptainer
drive?
Yes, it is possible to load
applications within the
Cryptainer Volume. You may
try this by installing an
application to the
Cryptainer Volume. During
the process of install,
simply point to the
Cryptainer Drive letter
(when it is loaded).
Almost all applications
like MS office, Adobe
products etc work fine.
Outlook Express and
Internet Explorer are
difficult to install in a
Cryptainer drive.
Microsoft Outlook Express
has a known compatibility
issue with removable or
network drives. That is,
you can not place your mail
folders on the removable or
network drives.
According to Microsoft, The
Outlook Express message
folder must be located on a
local hard disk, not on
removable media or a
network share. Other e-mail
clients work fine (The Bat,
Eudora etc..)
Can
Cryptainer encrypt
USB/CD/Removable
Drives?
Yes, by using Cryptainer it
is possible to encrypt
files directly on any
removable media. Cryptainer
has the flexibility to
store and port data on
removable media like Zip
disks, tape drives, MO
drives, USB drive, CD-RW,
DVD-RW etc. All you need to
do is to simply point to
the location of your
external drive (removable
media) while creating the
Cryptainer volume.
These volume files contain
all your data. Once mounted
- after you enter the
password/phrase, Cryptainer
vaults are accessible as
removable drives.
In this case, you will find
the mobile feature of
Cryptainer useful. The
"Cryptainer Mobile" feature
allows for creation of a
'stand-alone' install of
Cryptainer on removable
drives, so that your
encrypted volumes on the
removable drives can be
accessed from any PC
without needing a full
install of Cryptainer on
the host.
What is
ssoftsrv.exe? Is it
needed?
Ssoftsrv.exe is a service
installed by
Cryptainer/Cryptainer
Mobile. It is used to mount
Cryptainer volumes. It does
not use system resources
unless you mount a
Cryptainer volume with
it.
Please note that without
this service, Cryptainer
will not function.
How do I
uninstall/remove
ssoftsrv.exe?
If you have Cryptainer
Mobile installed - Please
click on 'yes' when
prompted to remove all
installed drivers, when
unloading/shutting down
Cryptainer. Alternatively
you can simply remove the
process via the Task
Manager. Select the
'processes' tab, highlight
ssoftsrv.exe and click on
'end process'.
If you have Cryptainer
installed on your desktop -
simply uninstall it. Please
use the unins000.exe
(uninstall) feature that
can be found within the
directory Cryptainer has
been installed in, or use
the Windows Control Panel
>> Add/Remove
Programs feature, and
uninstall Cryptainer. This
will also remove
ssoftsrv.exe.
Is it
possible to backup the
encrypted data (Cryptainer
volume)?
Yes, it is possible. The
Cryptainer volume/drive is
just a file. All data is
stored in an encrypted form
within this file. You can
backup this volume file to
any other external media by
means of simply
copying/burning it.
Can I create
multiple vaults (drives)?
Can they be accessed
simultaneously?
Yes. You can create as many
vaults as you like. You can
have up to four Cryptainer
drives working/loaded at
the same time.
To create a new volume,
please click on 'Tools
>> Additional
Cryptainer Volume' from the
program interface. Click on
'New Volume'. Specify the
necessary details and
you're done!
Can I delete
the volume (drive) created
by Cryptainer?
Yes. The Cryptainer
vault/volume is simply a
file. It can be deleted,
moved or copied to any
other folder. Please note
that once deleted, the
volume file will go to the
Recycle Bin.
Can I make
the Cryptainer volume
"delete-proof"?
No. This is not possible.
The volume file is like any
other windows file. It can
be deleted/copied or
moved.
On the other hand, you can
'hide' the Cryptainer file
(right click on the file
>> properties
>> tick the 'hidden'
attribute box). Only upon
searching for 'all hidden
files and folders' will you
be able to see the
Cryptainer Volume file.
Cryptainer
doesn't seem to recognize
my primary volume file.
What do I do?
You will need to load the
volume file via the 'Tools
- Additional Volume - Load
a volume' feature. Once
loaded, please click on
"File - Make this the
primary volume - Ok",
specify the primary vault
password and click Ok. This
will now be recognized as
your primary vault.
Please note that you can
make any of your existing
Cryptainer volume's, into
the primary vault by using
this tool.
